In today’s weekly ‘meet-the-seller’ feature, we’ll be meeting the lovely Marilyn, aka Pulp Sushi. Marilyn puts old-school-glam in a fresh, contemporary setting to create jewellery and accessories which are colourful, fun and effortless – perfect for lovers of vintage and retro chic with a bit of an edge. Check out her beautiful shop, then hurry on back for an interview with the designer herself!
Please tell us a bit about yourself:
Hi! I’m Marilyn, a native New Yorker, a yoga fiend, a fan of horror movies, and my weakness is caffeine. I live with my boyfriend just north of New York City.
How did you discover that you have creative tendencies?
I explored my creativity very early in my adolescence (ie: drawing, playing music, fashion design). I have a lot of creative friends. I found I wasn’t good at much except photography.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I let inspiration find me. If I’m not feeling it I don’t create. If I am out and about I may see an outfit, a book cover, a flower, even an advertisement. I make a note of it in my blackberry or take a picture for future reference.
Which materials do you use to create your products?
I use beads, charms, brass, gunmetal, plastic, resin, pendants, paper, marbles, various vintage finds.
What characterises your products/your style?
I like to think of it as kitschy, fun, and light-hearted
Who are your customers?
It really varies from children to seniors. When I do craft shows, my booth attracts all types. I try to make it as eye catching as possible. I like to make things for the young and young at heart.
What do you want to achieve in the future as a Designer/Creative?
I would love to create more “Alternative Wedding” pieces and come out with actual lines and collections once or twice a year.
How has your life changed since you opened your DaWanda shop?
It continues to bring the Pulp Sushi brand outside the U.S. I have a lot of International customers and it excites me. My items get around more than I do!
Please give us the names of three of your favourite shops on DaWanda:
Tizzalicious
Tilen
Sybile
