The Interview: Why is Instagram good for your business?

Even if you’re not an active social-media user, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard of Instagram. What’s the attraction behind this fast-growing app and how can it be used for your business? We’ll be talking to Ania who takes care of DaWanda’s Instagram account in English, as well as other PR activities.

What do we need an Instagram profile for?

Instagram has truly taken the world by storm – the purely visual, photo-sharing social media app has over 100 million users and has become a must-have for companies and brands. Rather than selling products to customers, Instagram is about showing who your brand is through visual snippets. So basically Instagram in now the best tool to show your brand personality and build your brand awareness. It’s also super simple and fun!

What do you need to know to get started?

What you need to know? Creating an Instagram account is fairly straightforward. Instagram is primarily a mobile app, so you have to download it before you can sign up for an account. Instagram is very similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a profile and a news feed. So simply sign up for an account, add a profile photo (e.g., brand logo) and a link to your website or directly to your DaWanda shop, connect your account to Facebook and let your followers know they can follow you there!

How can you interact with others?

Just like other social networks, you can interact with other users on Instagram by following them, being followed by them, commenting, liking, tagging and private messaging. You can even save the photos you see on Instagram. It’s like a simplified version of Facebook, with an emphasis on mobile use and image sharing.

For more advanced ones: If you have a Facebook page for your business we recommend converting your brand’s Instagram profile to a “business account” to receive access to analytics and insights. To do so just find the “Switch to Business Profile” option (in Settings) – it’s free of charge.

How can Instagram be helpful to develop your business?

Instagram is a great tool not only for brand promotion but also for you to gain knowledge about your customers! The interaction you receive through posts tells you a lot about them – check what product images they like the most and go through the comments! Use this very real feedback to your advantage while creating new products. Instagram is also a great place to watch your competitors and keep up with the latest trends. My tip for you: choose the top 5 most popular Instagrammers in your field and follow them (for example, the top 5 interior designers) to always stay up-to-date.

What’s the secret to a successful Instagram presence?

I can’t tell you what content will generate the most likes or engagement because it all depends on your brand, product, and fans’ personalities – and your own. But I think there are 5 easy rules to follow if you want to make your profile successful. Go for:

  • 1# Quality – remember that Instagram is a visual app, so although they’re meant to be snapped from your phone, this is still no place for pixelated images. If you want to grab attention, make sure your images are top quality.
  • 2# Regularity – the only way to gain more and more engagement from your followers is by giving them new photos and Instagram stories – they’re currently the most important! So basically – think about a realistic schedule and frequency of posts that you will be able to meet. Extra Tip: When you have a business account you can check when your audience is the most active and schedule your Instagram posts to match these times!
  • 3# Creativity – keep your audience interested with original posts, don’t just always post images from your website. One thing is crucial – at the end of the day your Instagram account is for your business, so keep it relevant to your brand and industry, that’s why people are following you.
  • 4# Keep in touch – remember that Instagram is a social media tool, so you need to stay in touch with your followers! Your daily Instagram routine: always react to their comments, check you Instagram inbox, like the posts of some of the people you follow, and keep an eye out for more accounts you like!
  • 5# Hashtags – they are an easy way to gain new followers. You’ll come up in peoples’ search results, so if you hashtag the relevant words, you’ll attract people who are interested in your content – meaning new followers! At the end of the day, remember that Instagram is great fun too! I love using my private account and looking for home inspirations and some cool recipes.
